Digital Story Telling Project

I used a program called voicethread for my storytelling project. I decided to do this project on how to solve word problems. This is a very hard concept for students to understand in math. It can also be related to ELA because the students need to comprehend what they are reading in the question in order to solve it.

Second Life

This is my avatar that I created but I am having trouble opening the program. It is saying something about the graphics failing and my video drivers not being up to date.
But from what I have seen from what my classmates have said about using second life in the classroom it can be used as a virtual classroom. When I discussed this idea with the ELA teacher that I am working with she thought it would be cool to have both of our classes log on at the same time in order to interact with each other. We can use it for cross curricular intstruction. All we would need to do is get enough computers for each class and see if we would be able to use this program in the school.

Article reviews

Theories and Practices of Mulitmodal Education

I thought that this was a very interesting article. The author talked a lot about how children can interpret text in many different ways and that there is not always one right answer. I think that ELA teachers should encouraged students to think like this as well. The text is not always the main focus of the story the students should look out the pictures, font size/color, graphics, etc. and draw their own conclusions as to what is going on in the story. I feel this will get them to higher levels of thinking when the reach the higher grades. Something that I did not know before reading this article is that the new literacies are focusing on multimodal texts where the reader will decide where to look and how to engage certain aspects of texts. Like I said before I feel it would be beneficial to have discussions about the different opinions of what is taking place in the story as the teacher is reading it.

Using the ADDIE Model to Design Second Life Activities for Online Learners

Second life seems to be a great tool to help enhance online learning. I do agree that there are some complications with using it. When I tried to log into Second Life I was not able to open the program because I needed to update some drivers or something. This could stand to be a big problem if the instructor tries to incorporate this into the class and the students run into the same problem that I have and are not computer genius'. I wish that I could have used Second LIfe because the way it is described in this article sounds very interesting. I like the fact that students can commnicate with people all over the world! I also thought that it was neat how the insructors met with their class and they paid close attention to the avatar's body language to make sure the students were paying attention. I also think that the ADDIE model is very helpful to the instructor because it helps them determine what the students know and how the instructor can help guide them through the task they would like them to complete.

UDL Bookbuilder Project

The book I created was for around a second grade level. I thought that this would be a good topic to talk about with younger children because a lot of them go through this when their parents have other children. It could lead into a discussion about their families and help the teacher get to know the students a little better.
I think that ELA teachers can use this in the classroom to introduce a story or novel that they will be reading. They can make a story that is related to topics that are being discussed in the story they will be covering. That way this will open up a discussion that they can have to familiarize the students with these topics before the begin reading the novel or story.
