Theories and Practices of Mulitmodal Education

I thought that this was a very interesting article. The author talked a lot about how children can interpret text in many different ways and that there is not always one right answer. I think that ELA teachers should encouraged students to think like this as well. The text is not always the main focus of the story the students should look out the pictures, font size/color, graphics, etc. and draw their own conclusions as to what is going on in the story. I feel this will get them to higher levels of thinking when the reach the higher grades. Something that I did not know before reading this article is that the new literacies are focusing on multimodal texts where the reader will decide where to look and how to engage certain aspects of texts. Like I said before I feel it would be beneficial to have discussions about the different opinions of what is taking place in the story as the teacher is reading it.

Using the ADDIE Model to Design Second Life Activities for Online Learners

Second life seems to be a great tool to help enhance online learning. I do agree that there are some complications with using it. When I tried to log into Second Life I was not able to open the program because I needed to update some drivers or something. This could stand to be a big problem if the instructor tries to incorporate this into the class and the students run into the same problem that I have and are not computer genius'. I wish that I could have used Second LIfe because the way it is described in this article sounds very interesting. I like the fact that students can commnicate with people all over the world! I also thought that it was neat how the insructors met with their class and they paid close attention to the avatar's body language to make sure the students were paying attention. I also think that the ADDIE model is very helpful to the instructor because it helps them determine what the students know and how the instructor can help guide them through the task they would like them to complete.
